FAQ / BEFORE SURGERY

WHEN IS THE LAST TIME MY ANIMAL CAN EAT/DRINK BEFORE THEY UNDERGO SURGERY?

No food or water after midnight please. (nothing six hours before surgery)

DO I NEED TO ADMINISTER ANY MEDICINE TO MY PET BEFORE SURGERY?

This is the doctor's decision.... please ask if we have forgotten to tell you. This is especially important if the medication is forbetes or to prevent seizures.

DO I NEED TO FILL OUT ANY PAPERWORK BEFORE THE DAY OF SURGERY?

YES! Please plan on spending about 10-15 minutes in our office discussing the procedure and signing paperwork. Typically we review the procedure and fill out the paperwork the morning of the surgery at an appointment. If you need different arrangements please let us know.  We would be happy to accommodate, whichever is more convenient for client.

HOW EARLY SHOULD I ARRIVE AT THE CLINIC BEFORE THE SCHEDULED SURGERY?

Please show up at your scheduled time. We have planned this time just for you to make sure that you are comfortable and get all of your questions answered. We want to be able to spend as much time with you as needed.

CAN I BE IN THE SURGICAL ROOM WITH MY PET?

Unfortunately this is not possible. Our operating room is a sterile room.  We take special precautions to ensure the safety of your animal; including someone in the room that is not medically necessary poses a threat your pet. Thank you for understanding.

HOW LONG WILL MY PET NEED TO STAY AT THE CLINIC AFTER SURGERY?

We will send your pet home as soon as it is ready. For a spay (fixing a female dog or cat) this will include an overnight visit with Dr. Sara and her staff. Dr. Sara will need to make sure that your little girls' pain is well controlled and monitor her incision site for bruising and swelling. A spay is a major abdominal surgery and we just want to make sure your baby girl is feeling and doing well before she goes home with you. Most other procedures that require anesthesia will go home the same day; however, we want to make sure they can walk a straight line.
